Gonzalo Lizarralde studies housing and its relationships with long-term development. His work includes the study of the process of housing (including community participation); the relationship between habitat and infrastructure; post-disaster housing and the technological aspects of housing construction.

Gonzalo Lizarralde is a specialist on the performance and evaluation of construction projects. His work includes the definition of performance criteria and the definition of methods of evaluation for assessing the quality of both the product and the process of developing architectural projects.

Gonzalo Lizarralde has largely studied the performance of low-cost housing projects after natural disasters. His case studies include projects in Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras and South Africa.

The studies conducted by Gonzalo Lizarralde analyze the organizational design and the procurement strategies of architectural projects and post-disaster reconstruction projects. In his work, the project is considered as a system that interacts with a complex environment. This approach permits a better understanding of the risks and opportunities usually found in construction projects.

Gonzalo Lizarralde explores the relations between architecture (the space) and the consolidation of democratic values in contemporary societies. His work analyzes how the space can contribute to reaffirm values of participation, equity and social integration.

Gonzalo Lizarralde taught during two years the course "espace et sociétés" at the Institut d'urbanisme of Université de Montréal and he has conducted three studios for the exploration of this subject. Dr. Lizarralde has presented various public lectures on "architecture and democracy" (conference poster, abstract).

Dr. Lizarralde has published various articles in respected academic journals, book chapters, book reviews and multiple conference papers in the fields of low-cost housing, project and construction management, information management and post-disaster reconstruction.
